Previous research in socialization indicates that sex role definitions in a certain society are internalized and learned by its members through different means among which are books. The present study examines the image of women and the sex roles attributed to them in 52 Arabic text books printed between — and are currently in use by the majority of elementary and intermediate schools in Lebanon. The results of this survey are consistent with previous research findings on French, American and Italian books, which depict women in the traditional role of mother, whose major function is cooking and housekeeping. They are presented as martyrs who may only attain self-fulfillment through sacrificing their life for their husbands and children.
